Katelynn update

Just before midnight, the NICU nurse called. Katelynn was doing much better. They removed the oxygen tent and she is on just the nasal cannula and her oxygen is down to 30% instead of 100%. They got permission from the doctor to go ahead and start feeding her. Jason stayed home with Keilah while I rushed down to the hospital so I could be a part of her first feeding. I was able to hold her for almost an hour and I was allowed to feed her the first bottle.

This morning Jason and I headed back over to the hospital for her 9am feeding. Jason held her for the very first time and fed her the bottle. At this point they are only allowing her to eat about half an ounce and she is getting the rest of her nutrition through the IV. As they see her tolerating the feedings they will gradually increase the amount she is allowed to have at feedings and they will decrease her IV. We stayed for quite a while and just held her this morning before Jason dropped me off to rest at home and he went to gramma's to be with Keilah.

I've been pumping every 3 hours, day and night, trying to stimulate milk production. Jason and I went back to the hospital for her 3:00pm feeding so I could try and nurse her for the first time. She latched on right away and was right at home. According to the lactation nurse, Katelynn has a short frenulum so we just need to watch and make sure she is nursing correctly once my milk actually comes in.

I went back to the hospital by myself for the 9:00pm feeding to find that they had moved her to the step down NICU which is great news! She is one step closer to coming home. We nursed, had a bottle, and snuggled for a little over an hour. I was not able to get much information about her current status since she had just been transferred, but hopefully I will be able to find out tomorrow when Jason and I go to her morning feeding.
