Aside from the first couple months when my milk first came in, I have always struggled to keep my milk supply. I had the same problem with Keilah too. I've been taking Fenugreek, an herbal supplement to boost milk supply, daily for the last few months. But even that has not been enough. By the end of the day I have almost nothing left to give. Katelynn gets extremely frustrated when she is nursing because she is still hungry and she is not getting what she wants. I have quickly gone through my frozen supply of breastmilk that I stored up during those first couple months when my milk first came in. Now I am wishing had spent more time pumping/freezing when I had the ability to do so (note to self for next time).
About a month ago, Katelynn started showing signs that she was ready to start eating solid foods--staring at my food, pretending that she was chewing while she watched me eat, etc. So we tried rice cereal mixed with breastmilk and she loved it! She could not eat it fast enough and pretty much attacked the spoon everytime it came near her.
That lasted for about a week. Then they all caught that stomach virus the day after Keilah's birthday. Once Katelynn was feeling better I tried to give her cereal again and she wanted nothing to do with it. She would purse her lips together so I could not get in her mouth with the spoon. We gave up for a few days before trying again. No luck. Took another break and then tried again. Still no luck.
Her pediatrician is already keeping an eye on her weight because she has dropped from 90% to 50% on the growth chart. I know she is going to be a slender kid, just like Keilah, but I don't want her to be losing weight unnecessarily and cause her ped to become concerned. At this point, I needed her to start eating solids. So we started with oatmeal this time, hoping that she would start eating. After a week of trying, she finally started to eat yesterday. Woohoo! Tonight, I couldn't spoon it into her mouth fast enough. By the time she was done she had eaten 3 bowls. We tried peas, but that didn't go over too well. She gagged like she was going to throw up everytime I put it in her mouth. lol. [I will try to take pictures tomorrow] I think I have another drama queen in training here. lol. At this point I am just so happy she is eating!
Merry Christmas!!!
